Cathédrale Saint-Pierre de Genève

Description

Dédiée à Saint-Pierre et image emblématique de Genève, qu’elle domine depuis la colline de la Vieille-Ville, la cathédrale est aussi le symbole du rayonnement de la Rome protestante.


La présence d’une cathédrale et d’un ensemble religieux sur le site de Saint-Pierre est attestée depuis le quatrième siècle de notre ère. Jusqu’au XIe siècle, la structure évoluera jusqu’à la création d’un bâtiment unique, mais c’est au XIIe siècle que le premier prince-évêque de Genève, Arducius de Faucigny, entamera la construction de l’actuelle cathédrale, étape qui s’étendra sur un siècle environ, de 1150 à 1250.
